The thirteen-storeys refers to the "Shuinandong refinery site" in Ruifang District, New Taipei, a building left over by the excavation of copper mines during the Japanese rule period. The main building was planned and built by Japanese factory director Sanmao Jujiro in 1933 in response to the excavation of copper mines during the Japanese occupation period. A total of 13 storeys are built against the mountain, which was called the "thirteenth-storeys" by the miners and residents at that time. Up to now, its basic structure still exists, which is a precious historical relic that records the history of Taiwan's mining development, and becomes a promising, mysterious and sacred city of the sky.

Zhou Lian: the thirteen-storeys is the continuation of history, and it is hoped that the humanistic spirit of Taiwan can be brightened

Today, this precious 100-year-old mining site has formed a unique historical landscape with surrounding fishermen's settlements and mining areas. This year, in order to re-understand the beauty of Golden Mountain City as well as the historical story behind it, Taiwan Power Company specially invited Mr. Zhou Lian, an international lighting art master, to work with He Cairou, a cutting-edge artist, to "light up the thirteen-storeys" of public art. Taiwan Power Company will jointly hold a lighting ceremony with the Cultural Association during this year's Mid-Autumn Festival, and it will be lit from 6: 00 to 9: 00 in the evening.

Zhou Lian once designed lighting for the Statue of Liberty in New York, and his works are throughout major cities in the world. Speaking of the lighting design located at the thirteen-storeys, he was still very happy, and could not help but talk about a lot behind the idea. "My impression of Jinguashi comes from the Sad City directed by Hou Xiaoxian. The film allows me to see life, see mining areas, and experience a period of history in Taiwan. Standing on thirteen-storeys is like a continuation of history. "

He began to participate in the whole project more than two years ago, but Zhou Lian never regarded it as a creation, but thought it was a social responsibility to show Taiwan's humanistic spirit. "In this place, the lives of the common people continued. In the past, they quietly fought for their livelihood. There were fishing villages on the left and Shuinandong on the right. Some people went out to fish, and many visitors did not have the opportunity to stay here. "

There is no need to deliberately illuminate the thirteen-storeys, but light should be like pushing a boat down the river, saving history and pushing it forward

He has said in many interviews: there is great beauty in heaven and earth. The role of lighting is to illuminate our nighttime life, which can be all kinds of lights, and can be warm and delicate. He was asked how bright it would be to illuminate the thirteen-storeys. He, who knows light, understands light, and builds deep feelings with light, does not rush to answer: "just pushing the boat down the river, not deliberately doing anything, this is very real but very difficult. What I am thinking about is how to preserve history and push it further forward." Beauty, creation, these words are only adjectives, and what we do is beyond description. "

From macro to micro, illuminate history and also awaken the inner feeling

From macro to micro, it is the presentation of the cooperation between Zhou Lian and He Cairou. Teacher Zhou explained: "When we usually do architectural lighting, we will be based on the urban scale, the street scale, and the pedestrian scale, but there is no such scale for the thirteen-storeys, and the lighting logic of the textbook is very difficult to implement. Therefore, the lighting of the thirteen-storeys is closer to the psychological level. Amber soft light will light up the thirteen-storeys storey by storey with different brightness, and quietly catch a glimpse of the refinery appearance. He stressed that it is not necessary to separate the brightness from the vision of the surrounding fishing villages. On the contrary, it is separated by the color temperature and the chromaticity, and the brightness can be very prominent if it does not interfere with the brightness. Even if the macro visual shock is not high, it can evoke a lot of inner feelings.

Like the light from the crack between a door and its frame, open the door of imagination for the night scene

Upon the first visit to the site, He Cairou has been deeply shaken: "it seems to be ruins here but there are traces of time, very surreal and also like static time and space. I began to think about how to microscopically present the neglected scene." "What teacher Zhou said also made her remember deeply:" the teacher said that lighting is not to light things up, not the brighter the better, the prettier. For example, the thirteen-storeys is a spectacle in itself. How do we adjust the light to the most suitable for this side? These conversations and thoughts are more important. So she installed "I" in the abandoned factory building, the tunnel, the staircase, and the mine screening factory leading to the thirteen-story curved mountain road, like a landmark on a map during the day, and "I" turned into a luminous body at night. Like the light coming from the crack between a door and its frame, it opens the door of imagination for the night scene. Combining theater design and visual presentation, a door to light the past will be created in these traces of history, so that they are illuminated in the moment, but also stir our desire to explore these traces of history. The work "I" invites everyone to stop here and savor the blurred poetry between the visible and the invisible.
